“What’s in a name?” Shakespeare’s Juliet mused that names themselves don’t matter, but the Bible shows us otherwise. Names signify identity, purpose, and mission. In John 8:12, Jesus says, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” This declaration reveals His deity, connecting Him to the divine name “I AM” from Exodus 3:14, where God identifies Himself to Moses. This declaration also tells us that Jesus is “the light of the world.”
Sun light is essential for life. Our planet needs light to survive. In Scripture, light symbolises truth, purity, and divine presence. Jesus, the light of the world, offers more than physical illumination; He brings spiritual light, exposing sin and offering eternal life. His claim ties back to creation in Genesis when God’s first act was to create light, separating it from darkness (Genesis 1:3-4). Jesus affirms He was present at the creation, the beginning of light itself.
For believers, Jesus’ light shines in various ways. First, He opens blind spiritual eyes, revealing the need for salvation. Second, through the Holy Spirit, He guides, convicts, and transforms hearts. Third, His Word acts as a lamp, offering clarity and direction in life (Psalm 119:105).
To unbelievers, Jesus’ light reveals truth and calls for repentance. The good news is that His light triumphs over darkness. John 1:5 assures us, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” While sin and darkness persist in the world, they cannot extinguish His light.
Jesus calls His followers to reflect His light, serving as salt and light in their communities. This reflection isn’t limited to grand acts; everyday interactions—showing kindness, integrity, and grace—testify to the transformative power of Christ. St. Francis of Assisi is credited with saying, “Preach the gospel at all times; if necessary, use words.” Actions often speak volumes, but there are times where believers can tell others the good news about the light of the world.
Jesus promises that those who follow Him “will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” This light gives eternal life to those who believe in Christ as Lord and Saviour. In a world often overwhelmed by darkness, Christ’s light offers hope to the hopeless. Let us embrace His light and share it boldly, pointing others to the only source of lasting peace and salvation.
